Our schedule calls for us to visit Naples Bay Resort and Keewaydin Beach, however NBR has greatly raised their rates, making it no longer feasable for the club to go there. As we considered various alternatives there is a general feeling that the club very much enjoys going to the beach at Cayo Costa particularly at this time of year. So the plan is to not only have a beach day, but to get a number of charcoal grills together and barbeque up our favorite dishes on the beach. What could be better than chicken, sausage, ribs, shrimp, hot dogs or burgers nicely done on the grill. It will be everyones responsibilty to bring along their own food and grill as well as any salads, condiments and paper plates etc. Do not worry if you do not have your own grill as I expect there will be plenty there and a willingness to share. They are relatively inexpensive at Wallmart, starting at only $ 10.00. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Backyard-G...Grill/19597662 Club member Roy Frank who is our BBQ king, advises that he uses “ Kingsford Match Light Charcoal” as there is no need for lighter fluid and it does not flare up. A small bag goes a long way, he says.
Lets be sure to bring along some garbage bags and leave Cayo Costa cleaner than we found it.
So lets all get out our beach bags, beach chairs, beach towels, beach umbrellas, beach sandals, and beach whatever and head out to Cayo Costa for a great day with our FMO friends.*
If you are planning on attending this event, please let me know by Thursday evening, April 3rd so we know who all is coming. You may e mail me, or post up on our event thread on OSO. Attending Captains should read this information carefully to minimize any confusion.
This event is free of charge to FMO club members so come out and have a great day on the water and at the beach with like minded powerboat enthusiasts.
Start / Finish:
Our starting point as always will be the south side of the Sanibel Bridge. Boats should assemble around 10:45 am and we will leave by 11:00 AM sharp. The completion of the fun run is on our arrival at our lunch stop, in this case Cayo Costa Beach. Boats will leave on their own accord at a time that suits them. It is common for small groups of boats to leave together for home or points eleswhere.
Route:
I will act as the pace boat in my Renegade taking the group up the Intra Coastal Waterway (ICW) to Cayo Costa. Any boats wanting to run offshore and meet us at Cayo Costa are welcome to do so. I expect we will arrive at Cayo Costa about 11:45 AM.
I will lead the boats the first few miles until we pass under the westerly span of the Sanibel Causeway. At that point I will lower the yellow flag and the pace boat may be passed. Everyone can set their own comfortable pace. Please be aware that the ICW can be busy and as always, we need to respect others using the waterway giving them a wide berth. Just a word of caution: I sometimes see boats “ cutting the corners” outside the marked ICW channel and causes me concern that following boats that may not have “ local knowledge” could have a deeper draft and find themselves in trouble. I would try and avoid that for the sake of any that may be visiting from outside the area and following you. Low tide is at 10:37 AM so our run will take place just after low tide, a time to be careful.
Membership information:
All vessels participating in FMO events are required to have a club membership and provide proof of insurance. Memberships are on a calendar year basis and if you have not yet renewed your membership for 2014, or are new and wanting to join the club, you may do so online. Your membership will be good until Dec 31, 2014. Just go to www.ftmyersoffshore.com and click on “Membership” where you can provide your info and pay using PayPal or alternatively download the form and mail it in. You may also join / renew at any event during the lunch stop however it saves us time if done online. There is no change in membership fees. We hear all the time what a great thing FMO has going on and it can only continue with your continued support for the Club. A current copy of your vessel insurance information should be e mailed to FMO board member Eric Belisle at [email protected] or to me at the address below and I will forward on to Eric.
Fuel / Distance:
From the Sanibel Bridge to Cayo Costa and back to the start should be about 60 miles maximum, so not a very long run. 93 octane is very difficult to find these days so please leave with a full tank if you use high octane fuel.
Food:
Lunch: As mentioned in the pre amble above we will be barbequing our own lunches. If that is too much work or you are wanting do something a bit easier, feel free to bring along your own lunch and beverages to be had at your convenience at the Cayo Costa beach stop.
Communication:
Inter boat communication will be on VHF channel 72. My cell number is 239-776-0481. Anyone dropping out after the start should let me know so we do not spend time either waiting or looking for you. Leave a voicemail if no answer.
Pictures:
Club photographer Jay Nichols (OSO Jayboat) will be aboard my Renegade capturing as many of our member boats as possible during the coarse of the day. Please be sure to come alongside for your picture, and no need to get too close with Jay’s lense capabilities.
Anyone wishing to purchase prints from Jay from this or past runs may contact him directly at: 941-276-5650 or e mail: [email protected]
As always after each run, Jay will post pictures of your boats on OSO and I will provide links via e mail so you can view them.

We will have low tide on Pine Island Sound at 10:37 AM. The next high tide on the Sound is at 4:53 PM.

Safety:
Each boat Captain is required to operate his vessel in a safe manner and is responsible for his / her crew and their safety.
When running in the Intra Coastal Waterway (ICW) please be aware that this can be a high traffic area and we ask that the boating public be given a wide berth and that the rules of the road (waterway) be adhered to.
Our next event:
This run will conclude our best season ever. Your FMO board has already been discussing some exciting new venues when our 2014 / 15 season gets started in October, including a weekend run down to the Keys. If you have thoughts on next season’s event schedule, please be sure to share them with any of the board members for consideration. The ability to handle our size of group must always be a consideration. We expect to publish next season’s schedule by August at the latest.

I will get started with a boat list in just a day or so. I'm aware of 8 boats already including 2 members east of Orlando that will be joining us for their first FMO event.
