Depth transducer location on 280ss?

Depth transducer location on 280ss?
Just re-epoxied the original transducer to the hull and it won't read. Are they relaiable in the factory location or do most people drill thu and mount a thru-hull style?
The original was bumbeped when then yanked my motor to install a y pipe. The original location looks to be just behind the bulkhead on the port side.
