Well it's here! The Memorial Day weekend the official kick off to summer and the boaters are out! For us year round boaters it's another weekend but this is the time everybody starts using their boats regularly. This is good news but it does bring about some concerns too. Boating accidents were down nationally according to the U.S. coast guard but not in Florida. Florida saw the highest number of accidents and deaths due to boating accidents. Some people might say we have more water or boats but we beat out states with a lot of people and boats.
There were 685 severe boating accidents and 58 deaths in 2013.
Here's the top reasons found for these boating accidents:
*Operation inattention
*Improper lookout
*Operator inexperience
*Excessive speed
*Machinery failure

Alcohol was the leading known contributor to these accidents. Because most of the accidents involved collision between two motor boats which lead to drowning. Three-fourths of deaths were known to be from drowning. Lack of wearing life jackets.
Facts are if you're unconscious in water you drown and help is far away. Throw in alcohol and things are sure to be deadly.

So we put the facts out there now what to do. We are firm non-alcohol boaters. No alcohol while boating not fair to our kids or other boating families. If you choose to drink and boat have a designated driver. We know and see that many boating families do in fact drink and boat we beg you put life jackets on all your kids and go easy .
You don't get a second chance sometimes the choices you make are forever and they can affect innocent boating families.
Get educated check out the Florida Wildlife Commissions website myfwc.com. There you will find boating regulations, guidelines and classes. If your a new boater a boating course would be imperative and there online.

Before you enjoy your next adventure in boating prepare yourself with the proper knowledge and set a safety standard of putting your family and all the other families first. Have fun go fast, go slow, tow a rope, cast a line, take a dip but do it safely!

YOU ARE GOING TO GET ME ON MY HIGH HORSE -- AND IF I OFFEND ANYONE - I DON'T CARE....

Booze and boating NEVER mix - I'm with you 100%- we don't have a drop of booze when we are on, with, near or associated with the boat or for that matter ANY moving machinery - IT IS WRONG -- PERIOD. We are smarter than that. We have ALWAYS practiced this policy and will always do so as long as there is breath in this body.

If you hit the sauce you are not part of my boat. I've seen so many people so smashed trying to ski, tube- it is sad...These behaviors will cause accidents and that costs all of us more, not only in higher insurance premiums - we will afford that - but the cost in family/friends being injured can never be paid --

Thanks you very much for you comments. We try to be a boating web site to find places where the family can go to have fun and also talk about safe boating and other issues. If there is something that you would like us to blog about please let us know.
