Angry Blew out lower unit

On my way home tonight after making a moon light cruise, my lower unit went out. We were running about 35mph and the next thing I knew, we were dead in the water.
We were able to get a tow back to the landing and that helped a lot. My neighbor hooked on to my trailer and drove several miles to pick us up.
I'm not sure what happened, but we did notice thate the top cover of the outdrive was busted open and lower unit gear oil was running out of it. We did not get any warning that this was about to happen, it just went out all together.
It is a mercurizer outdrive with less than one hundred hours.
After getting the boat on the trailer, we noticed that the top cap was busted on it. At this point we are not sure what caused this. Any suggestionsk??????????????/

You probably broke the top cap when you were running hard from a landing with the power on or something, then as you were cruising it worked its away up slowly and then broke. They do make stronger caps to hold the thing together. Good luck with the fix.

that's what usually happens when the gear set breaks.

Are you going to be able to get it fixed before the Labor Day cruise?

Where are you going to get it fixed?

How was the rest of the trip and what did I miss?

I had a friend of mine look at the outdrive today and he says it is blown. It will be in the shop first thing in the morning. Hopefully it will be replace/repaired before next weekend. We have plans on driving it to Gulfport, Mississippi for the weekend. That is about a 3 hour ride from where I live. Sure glad that it broke when we were close to home!
I'll keep you all posted on the repairs.........
