Lake Griffin a Florida Natural Beauty

Lake Griffin a Florida Natural Beauty

08/04/2014

We love our Harris chain of lakes for all its boater friendly fun. It has many points of access, restaurants, parks for play and splashing, sea plane adventures and beautiful nature. We often speak of Lake Harris, Eustis, Dora and Beauclaire but fail to mention Lake Griffin. Lake Griffin is also a part of these chains and may be overlooked by the weekend boater. To head up to Lake Griffin you trek over to the Northwest corner of Lake Eustis and head up Haines creek it’s a winding run up to Lake Griffin with beautiful views of nature. This trip is approximately seven miles.

Did you know that Lake Griffin is the 8th largest lake in Florida and is approximately seven miles long? (One could make quite a speedy pass with seven miles of room!) It’s the least developed lake along the chains and has many large alligators and boasts wonderful fishing. There are two locks which control the water levels of the lake. A public boat ramp is accessible on 441 at the south end of the lake at Herlong Park.

If you’re in to camping and boating there is Griffin State Park which is on Little Lake Griffin and may be reached through a canal that connects to Lake Griffin. It has campsites, walking trails a nice place to camp. There is a boat ramp there that accommodates vessels up to 25 feet in length and the water depth around the ramp is three to four feet. You could travel up to Lake Griffin and farther North to Silver Springs, however because of narrow sharp turns in the Ocala National Forest it not recommended for boats other than outboard bass boats.

We haven’t ventured up to Lake Griffin in a while we prefer to make this trip when the weather cools just a bit in September to October and enjoy the warm but comfortable ride up and back. Swimming is not recommend as the water is not clear and there is much wildlife. (Big gators) If you decide to make this trip be gassed up and best to back by dark as this trek through Florida’s nature would be quite dark. (Locks also close at designated times) This may not be everyone’s cup of tea but we love exposing our kids to the real beauty of Florida. If you’ve never checked this lake out consider it for your next adventure in boating.

P.S. We have posted pix of the boat races on Lake Dora at Tavares in the past, the dates for this fall if anyone is interested:

September 14th Hydrocross Watercraft Racing and Hydro Drag World Championship November 1-3rd Check out the City of Tavares website for more details.
