Default Big Boat shopping -- Toyota sequoia

I currently have a Toyota sequoia platinum 5.7 (load leveling) 4x4 and really not wanting to upgrade to a bigger truck. I regularly tow my 8k enclosed 24 foot trailer with a wd hitch. It handles this load easily and is extremely stable. It feels like it could handle another 2-3k lbs and the sequoia is rated for up to 10k towing. I'm currently shopping and would like to get something in the 30-35ft range preferably a fountain 35. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the ability to pull something this big like a 35 lightning on an aluminum trailer with EOH brakes?

The sequoia is not like a Tahoe or suburban. When I bought it I first tried hauling my race car trailer with both a Tahoe and then a suburban. Neither SUV was very stable. I only looked at the sequoia as a last ditch effort to avoid a big truck or suburban 2500 (wife daily drives it) The sequoia pulls WAY more stable than either but I agree it's still a short wheelbase suv and it's hard to defy the laws of physics.

If I'm dreaming with a boat this big behind it, what boats should I be considering? Really don't want to upgrade the SUV but not looking to be limited to a 27' single boat

Thanks in advance for any input

The last 35 fountains had a "claimed" dry weight of 9800lbs. Add fuel and trailer, I know my steel Myco for my 32 is 1800lbs.

Maybe if you know someone with the boat size you want will let you tow it and see.

If you had any other model Sequoia, I'd say no but yours is equipped with a very good leveling system and I would have no problem towing 10k lbs with it in my opinion. Your stability control system is also very good.

Bottom line is that it's going to depend on the boat & trailer. For example, a heavy layup boat (38 Cigarette) & steel trailer is going to be alot heavier than a light layup boat (388 Hustler) & aluminum trailer. Do your research on the weights of boats & trailers you are looking at buying so you don't overload your Sequoia. As far as length is concerned, it's alot less of an issue than the weight you are pulling.

Also, the quality, condition, and setup of the trailer is equally as important as the tow vehicle. Identical boats will tow completely different on different trailers.

I tow a 32ft Advantage(not the heaviest by far) with my 2500HD Duramax and wouldn't want to think about trying to pull it with a 1/2 ton rated vehicle. However, if you could stay UNDER the rated towing capacity of the Sequoia, it would be legal....

I pull a 32 Sunsation with my EcoBoost and it does fantastic. Plenty of power and stops awesome with the EoH. Under the rating and room to spare. I haven't driven your vehicle but going by the numbers, you'd be safe with a 32 Sunsation on aluminum.

Sharky just scaled his 35 fountain executioner. It's in the section somewhere. The scale ticket was posted. Aluminum trailer. Do a search for sharky images I think is the screen name and you will find it.

A boat trailer setup is not balanced like a cargo trailer. Even with proper tongue weight and/or a weight distributing hitch setup, you can and will end up with tail wagging the dog; especially in evasive maneuvers.

If you are getting anything bigger than your current setup, you need more truck. I just picked up a spare truck, an 8.1L/Allison 2500HD for way under $10K. It's well used, but still a very solid platform for towing whatever I want. I've always been one to keep my vehicles in pristine condition, and still do. However, it is GREAT owning a beater that I don't care what happens to it. Where you live, I'd think having a spare 4WD vehicle would be a sound investment as well.

BTW, I went and drove a couple Toyota 5.7L Tundras. GREAT TRUCKS; I was THOROUGHLY surprised and impressed. But since I want this spare truck to tow my 37AT which is 13K lbs. on an aluminum trailer; I just could not pull the trigger on one.
