Default Sbc crate long block, recomendations

Buddy has '77 donzi classic 18 2+3 volvo small block, we fired it for first time yesterday and has freeze damaged block.
He wants to replace with crate long block.
Any suggestions which are good and what to stay away from?

Just help a friend this summer replace his SBC in a Chaparral. He looked around and bought a GM Vortec (300hp) long block crate motor, put the conversion carb intake on it and that thing has been awesome! Wasn't from Scoggins/Dickie, but some GM Direct something or other, if your interested I'll call him and get the name. They had a warehouse here in Dallas. It had a 3yr/36k mile warranty (in a car-they didn't ask! haha!) Crate motor was under $2k and he save shipping. No core. All new block and parts. Was a cool deal.

Pace Performance is where he got the engine. They have an older style (perimeter bolts valve cover) 300hp/350cid for $1889.88 brand new GM. My buddy talked with them on the phone and came up with a later model 300hp/350 vortec head(center bolt valve covers/no fuel pump boss) for $2095 I think? My machinist and parts cost me more than that (not to mention how slow he is) and that's if I have the engine already, and these are all std. bores and ready to go with warranty!

I've talked to the guys at M.I. Motorz and they have been very helpful. As I'm in the market for a new SBC. There Vortec long block is about $2,700.
