So I picked up that beat up 33 Outlaw some of you saw on Craigslist in NY. Its a project and I'll post another thread to show my work in progress.
The motors are no good. Seized and corroded. So I'll be repowering with a new set of 454 longblocks. Thing is these Gen6's are quite pricey. And I need new injectors, distributors, sensors, starters, alternators, etc... so I was thinking what if I get 2 older Gen4 or Gen5 engines, intakes and carbs to match and save some money. No injectors, sensors, less (and cheaper) parts to replace... I can probably cover the cost of the carb motors by just selling the intakes and plenums off the MPI's!!!
Will I get more, equal or less HP with the basic carbureted engines? Considering all the technology in the MPI I'm pretty sure the carbs burn more fuel... but how much more? Resale value? Although I don't plan on selling anytime soon, is it still the same 33 Outlaw with twin 454's or will it be considered inferior to the one with mag mpi's?

Should I do it? Or just keep it as is?

Another thing I was wondering is can I just eliminate the Corsa diverters and close off the Y pipe connector to have straight open "thru-hull" exhaust? I doubt I'll be using the switch to make it quiet. The louder the better!

I would either go carbs or aftermarket fuel injection. Ditch the OEM stuff, and I would get rid of the silent choice as it is fallible with potential reversion issues if you don't have any reasons to keep it.

Have you thought about looking for a pair of 502 takeouts ready to drop in? There is a guy selling a pair on powerboat swap shop on Facebook, I think for $5000 per motor. Might be an option worth looking into.

I agree that seems high but you can find stories of 502's if left stock and maintained properly going 1000 hours+. You mentioned resale value in you initial post and putting stock merc motors in will without a doubt help the boat sell faster when the time comes. I would not be too concerned with the hours, you can have the engines scanned and see how they were run. I would also get a compression and leak down test done to help determine the viability of the motors. If all that checks out drop them in and run them, if you decide down the line to keep the boat and bump up the power you have a great platform to work off of. Just a thought.
