Default engine dimensions

Okay, so there have been questions on tall decks but on simple sizing what are the differences between, say a sbc and a bbc from bellhousing to front of crank. Right now I have a gen v with maybe 2 inches of clearance in front, so the power coming from the smaller ls engines is piquing my interest, not to mention the possible weight savings if an aluminum block was used. Has anyone researched this much and what are the potential weight savings?

I would have thought a few people might be interested, or share some knowledge due to bilge constraints?
