Default New super water repellant treatment for metal

Cant wait to see this new coating on a hull and outdrive, imagine how much friction will be reduced, superhydrophobic metal

That would be pretty cool if it trickled down to our level! Would be interesting to see when someone tests it on an actual drive and prop like you said to see if there was a notable difference.

been seeing these clips pop up (for the treatment stuff) for about a year now but have yet to see anything about durability or how long one could expect the coating to last. sort of reminds me of those super stain removers that showed it removing ink, blood and rust but failed to mention it only works on . . . . well . . . . ink, blood and rust stains lol.

its certainly is cool though and even if it is a short term use product I got a couple uses in mind

Will be a while. Power consumption is huge.

Guo and Vorobyev use extremely powerful, but ultra-short, laser pulses to change the surface of the metals. A femtosecond laser pulse lasts on the order of a quadrillionth of a second but reaches a peak power equivalent to that of the entire power grid of North America during its short burst.

don't think I would want to coat my prop with water repellant. I want it to grab not slip

i would think you would want the design of the prop to grab, not the actual prop surface. With different (or far less) surface friction this could open up prop design/profiles not presently achievable or even thought of yet

The difference between this and wipe on coatings is this process physically changes the surface, most coating are wipe on and from my industry in cars you can see them changing in about 2 years. still glossy, just a little less hydrophobic. I have the paint on the side of my Tiger done with it and it is remarkable how clean the boat stays as well as how fast it cleans up once the bay scum does happen to stick to it.

Offshoredrillin, when you say you have the paint done, do you mean something was mixed into the paint before it was applied? Or was one of the products applied to the boat after it was painted?

Thanks!
