where is a good place to buy this without getting raped?

It is very hard to freshen up 496 on a budget. Even the head bolts special. Called torque to stretch or stretch to torque. They are not reusable and are very expensive. Whats wrong with it right now..

How many hours are on it? Some 496's in commercial applications have 2000 hours.


The bolts are called torque to yield. However, you can buy ARP head bolts for the 496/8.1

Gaskets are available thru Fel pro, or victor reinz. Bearings from clevite or sealed power, rings sealed power, head bolts arp, GM, etc.

These engines were used in a ton of commercial, light duty, and industrial duty applications, besides marine.

No such thing as budget haha

make sure you deck block, line hone, do it right..... don't cheat or you pay price, find a good machine shop you can trust also...
