I'm rebuilding a 1973 27' Magnum Sedan, and removed the fuel tanks today, after removing about 60 gallons of fuel that was at least 6 years old, probably closer to 8. Got the tanks out, according to the sticker they were replaced in 1995, and are made of 6061 Aluminum. The outside of the tanks look like new, and there is no evidence of them leaking. What would be the best way to clean them? I don't think the local radiator shop has a tank big enough to dunk them. Anyone know of a shop in Chicago that could do it? I am going to rig up a pressure testing tool for them from a boost leak tester I made for my Turbocharger / Intercooler on my car.

just keep the pressure down. i think they test at 4 or 5 psi. put 30 in there they will look like spongebob. i also think you will find them to be good. as far as cleaning them, they are a tank. you put whatever solution or solvent in them and swish it around. they don't need to be submerged in hundreds of gallons of the stuff.

Laquer thinner, acetone...or like bondo said use gas with ethanol in it and wash all the stuff into your injectors. At least you guys dont have my oroblem. Ethanol dissolved the resin out of the glass hatteras fuel tanks and deposited it on my valve stems, sticking valves...
