Default Question on SSMIV drive Plate

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...058931776.html

If you look at the pictures of the drives on this link, there is a plate between the upper and lower that sticks out the back horizontilally.
I haven't seen this before on these drives. I have seen the bolt on Dolphins that you see on Alpha's and such, but not on a performance boat.
I am considering the boat for the motors and drives.
Any thoughts on these plates?

they were designed to help get the boat on plane because the IV drive does not have a cave plate have used them in the past they worked well.

Also could be the owner wanted it for safety reasons if anyone were to ever slip or fall off the back.
