Default k&n oil filter on billet aluminum mount.Almost impossible to get off. Anyone else.

I have been having a problem with my K&N oil filters being almost impossible to get off of my Harden billet aluminum mount. Anyone else having this problem and what did you do to solve it. I'm changing my oil about every 8-10 hours and tightening the filter by hand and slightly snugging it up with a wrench. I am a mechanic by trade so I do know how to change oil and tighten filters. Something with this filter and mount makes them very hard to get off without destroying the filter or the tools to remove them. Jeff Wurl

We use the same combination but only tighten the oil filter medium hand tight. We sometimes have used a modified oil filter strap wrench to remove.

I have so many oil filter wrenches that are needed for so many different apps.

If you have access room to fit this wrench on the oil filter I highly recommend buying a quality one of these. Do not poke a hole all the thru the oil filter with a screw driver to remove it that way, all that is going to do is distort and or tear the oil filter really bad making it even harder to get off. Also whatever tool to even fit and grab it for removal will not work if that happens..

Like I said buy a quality one.

The HF one is just an example for show.

I've run into the same issue before. This is the wrench you need. I have never come across a filter that it won't take off. You can use either a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet. It has the 3/8" on one end and the 1/2" on the other. It will get it off......guarantee.

WOW, do they really sell those for $58.25? We used to sew the nylon strap for a very similar item to a company that made them for Caterpillar. I was under charging, LOL.

I didn't pay that much, but it wasn't that far off. It says Snap On it, so that's worth at least $40 of the $58. It's pretty heavy duty though. It has bailed me out more than once, so I would say that it has paid for itself by now.

Piston engine aircraft engines use spin on filters that look the same as automotive types but are torqued with a wrench to 18 ft lbs. We put DC4 which is a dielectric grease on the o ring seal before install so that it comes off easier next change and also doesn't damage a dry seal when torqued.

Doesnt kn make a filter that has 7/8 hex on the end of it for easier removal thats what all the aircaft ones have.

Yes the k&n filter has a hex on the back for a socket but the filter is locked on so tight that the spot welds on the hex break right off. I am glad to find out im not the only one with this problem. I will get the snap on strap wrench ordered when my dealer comes on Tuesday. Thanks, Jeff Wurl

heck for the 8 bucks I would try the HF one to. I have had fuel filters that were completely corroded to the mounting pad and that was the only tool that would remove them as not having to take the whole assembly off and putting into a vice.

Let me know how that tools works out because I have never had that problem if the Vice grip oil filter wrench will fit. And I am talking about a lot of marine oil & filter and fuel filter changes.
