One standard gear set/one XR gears
#1
Replaced and upper gear set temporarily with standard gear/u-joint on the existing large shaft lower unit to get me by till I can fix correctly. Now the standard drive seems to spin at lower RPM. Are the upper gear ratios the same?

the xr change the ratio in the lower and use one ratio in the upper ,the normal bravo does the ratio in the upper and the lowers are the same ratio so it could be spin different depending on the ratio you put in

Nope. Keep that std upper alive until you can get your replacement straight cut set and at least you can sell it off as a known good shifting set of (insert tooth count and or merc p/nhere) std bravo gears.if they shift good
help offset some of that xr pricetag.

a 1.5 XR and the std Bravo/X both use a 15/19 tooth gear set in the lower.
The 1.5 ratio bravo/X uses a 32/27 tooth gearset in the upper to make a 1.5 ratio.
What was the tooth count on the helical set you put in ?
