Sounds like cable end didnt get locked in the jaws . Your going to have to pull drive off far enough to reach in and pull linkage out of forward with large needlenose pliers or tool of choice. Turning propshaft while pulling linkage will make it shift a little easier. Make sure cable locks in when installing . If your new at it , after you get cable locked in , have someone in boat ease shifter into gear while your sliding drive on to keep a little tension on cable until it gets into cavity.
