I am looking at possibly moving to Indiana. I read that Lake Monroe is the largest lake in Indiana. Has anyone ever boated there? It looks like a lot of pontoons and houseboats.
Any go fast boats there? Pro's/Con's?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I live 45 minutes away and tow 4 hrs to Lake Cumberland. I guess it works for some but I think it's dirty, crowded and has way to much water patrol for me. I do like Patoka as a quiet get away about an hr south of Monroe but like I say its really quiet.

Mike is correct^. We still boat at Monroe almost every weekend though. Water levels have been good lately and that really helps with the issues stated above. Great Lakes are not far away so that is always an option for a long weekend.

Southern Indiana or Northern Indiana is the best place if you are a boater in Indiana. We boat on the Ohio river a lot and then you have Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley less then 2 hours away from the Southwest Indiana border. Cumberland is only 2 hours away from Southeast Indiana. I have never been to Monroe but I assume it is like Patoka Lake, in which is it small and really nowhere for a go fast boat to really go fast.

Thanks everyone for the input. I will have to look at how far I would be willing to commute to Bloomington, I may want to locate closer to Lake Michigan.
I grew up boating in Northern IL (Chain and Lake Michigan). I have been in So Cal for the last 20 Years.
I can't wait to get the heck out of here for a lot of reasons (mostly political).
I will be looking for a 38 Flat Deck or Straight bottom Gun in the next couple of months.

Yeah Monroe and Patoka will be way too small for that boat. You might as well be boating in a swimming pool. I-69 is being completed from Southwest Indiana to Bloomington, you might take that into consideration for your commute.

I was born in Bloomington and lived there until I graduated from IU, spent most of my weekends on Monroe great place to live. The lake seemed large to me at the time but after having a place on Kentucky/Barkley lake now for the past few years I realize how small it is in comparison. I still have friends that boat there and it does have a fair amount of p-toons and cruisers its really more of a 21-23 open bow lake than a 35 Top Gun Lake and yes the water patrol was always a problem. With the new I-69 you are still two hours (towing a boat) north of the OH river (I live on the OH River in Evansville, IN now) and another 1.5 hours to Kentucky/Barkley lake in western KY where there is a good concentration of "go fast boats", Bloomington is every bit of 4 hrs. south of the nearest point on Lake Michigan. If your are living/working in Bloomington I would suggest a smaller boat and enjoy Lake Monroe or be prepared for a 4hr tow most weekends.

I have a slip on Monroe and am there every weekend, April-Nov1st. Been doing this for 12 yrs now. Yes there are a lot of houseboats, up in the 90' range, lot of cruisers and family boats. Powerboats are making a comeback though. We have a couple Cigs, and Fountains on my dock. Tons of Bajas. But then Baja was sold by a large local dealer up till a few yrs ago. It's nothing the size of Cumberland, but it fits the void w/o having to drive 4-6 hrs every weekend. I drive 2 1/2 hrs each way. If all you want to do is run WFO for hrs, then you might get dizzy going in circles, but it's long enough you can air it out for speed fix, then head to the creek for raft ups. It's not the cleanest, nor the dirtiest. Doesn't stop everyone from swimming in it.
Muddy bottom for most part. As far as the CEO's, they are really only concerned about having your registration up to par. I actually think they are obsessed about it and go out of their way to check your tags. If your registration is legal and you're not acting like an idiot, you have zero worries with them. Only been stopped once in 12 yrs, and that was with new boat w/o numbers on yet. Showed them my papers and said having custom numbers made that week, they went about their way.

The lake is 10,750 acres of water surface, however @ half of that is all idle. from the causeway to the dam it is roughly 7 miles that you can run wfo. I leave my boat at Fourwinds and swim in Allen's Creek whenever it's not raining. As far as cleanliness it does kinda get stirred up but usually you can see down to your knees..fwiw I've boated on Lake Cumberland, Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkely, The Ohio river up to cinci, and played on the Muskegon river in Michigan for hot boat. I'd say if you like to run WFO for any distance get use to trailering somewhere else. If you want to hangout and float all day then come on out.
