Is it NORMAL on step-hull's

Is it normal on stepp hulls (Formula in particular) for the depth gauge to no read correctly when on plane? I assume this is due to the aeration induced by the step.....funny I should have realized that before I bought it......kind of dangerous to run where you have never gone before (on inland lakes) with no dependable depth gauge!!
Is there a fix? External transducer? true thru hull?

formulafastech....the transducer is glued to the inside hull starboard side of center rib about 2/3 the way back in the engine bay......there is a hole bored in the innerliner so as to make outer hull contact......glad yours works!!!
Steamin' rice- all Formula's have thru hulls, even my 97 312.......but I was questioning if the OLD stlye brass thru hulls or an external transducer would fix this problem??

You are going to have to get a transom/exterior mount transducer. I bought the Humminbird DF, which is re-labelled and sold as Gaffrig. It came with the transom mount unit and bracket. It is not that ugly. I do not have a stepped-hull, so I have the transducer mounted under my bilge pump plate. I know a lot of stepped-hulls have this problem.
