If a holly 850 on a stock 502 was over jetted or under jetted would I know without reading the air fuel readings?

I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but if over jetted it will probably run rich and just not make max power. If under jetted you might get a lean pop out the carb on acceleration, but it is also very possible that you will be completely unaware that you are detonating the crap out of the engine until something goes BOOM. Or your boat becomes one big knock-knock joke after you come back down to idle after a hard run. You have seen plenty of threads on OSO from others who have damaged engines from detonation. Not always a lot of warning that you are lean - that's the scary part.

An overly rich engine will sound blubbery. A lean engine will sound clean and crisp. To rich will be a little slower to build rpm than a lean motor that can be snappy.

Yes, the Holley 850's (since 2004) are Buetooth enabled. It will text you how lean or rich it is running.

I have my own ways of jetting for power and then to be on the safe side from there....however, I follow with plug readings from there...so, I am not going to tell others this method since they/you still have to be able to see, feel, and hear how things are...this you cannot describe for others to go off of.

I also feel you need to be able to do this when using Widebands and/or other tools.

what does "blubbery: sound like lol? Safe to assume richness caused by over jetting is different than richness caused by air/fuel mixture screws not being adjusted correctly?

If you cant "tell" by sound if its rich or lean its time to start reading plugs and/or wideband 02 sensors.

I can usally tell by sound but I still like an 02 sensor for WOT running as things can happen faster then your ear can pick up. A 200 dollar 02 gauge goes along ways.

Over jetting you will most likely hear the engine misfiring at high rpm.

Under jetting feels like you have to change pistons.

Cheap tool in the grand scheme of things

way lean can miss and pop @ wot, worse when cooler, tad lean, run fast, rich, will slow down, worse when hotter, 02 ONLY way to get it right.
