I am thinking about buying a boat in Canada and now I am trying to find out what is involved in getting it back to the U.S.
The boat is at a dealership in Quebec and I am wondering what kind of taxes are to be paid at the time of purchase. The boat was made in the U.S also. I have heard that there is almost a 15% tax to be paid at the time of purchase and the tax will be refunded because the boat will not be used in Canada anymore. I have been told that there is a form to be filled out and sent to the Canadian Gov to return the taxes. Does anyone know if this is true. From what I have read there should not be any tax paid at the U.S side except for your state sales tax since the boat was made in the U.S and it should meet all epa stuff since it is a 06.

I bought a boat from British Columbia a couple of years ago. I did not pay any such tax unless it was hidden in the purchase price from the dealer. Only tax was in the state when you register it. I used an agent who takes care of all the paperwork and makes the border crossing seamless. Call Mike Jones, Jones & Jones, 888-536-5679. It will be the best $1,000ish dollars you will spend in my opinion.

There is no Canadian sales tax if the dealer exports the boat to the U.S.
There is no duty if the boat is made in the U.S.
You are responsible for your local sales tax when you register the boat with your state, the same as if you bought it in another state or from a local dealer.
The problem is most people and dealerships are not used to cross-border transactions. This results in a bunch of misinformation.

This is what I was trying to figure out. When I was on the phone with him he said I still had to pay somewhere around 15% at the time of the purchase and I would get some forms to send to the Canadian Gov and they would refund the tax they got from me once I could prove it was not being used in Canada anymore. The other problem I am having is the language barrier while talking to them.
