Who owns 900sc's from Mercury. What year, What boat, how many hours, what type of maintainence schedule? Just doing some fact finding.

They are busy getting them serviced.

How's everyone doing? We run Mercs 900SC's in our 2001 42' Fountain and we just love them. Sure, we change the oil and plugs more than most but when you're doing 120 mph you don't mind taking a little extra time and care.

What is with the "NEW" 900 you guys recently purchased. What happened to the original one?

Also I remember you guys saying that you had a new canopied Fountain on order with the new Merc 1050's. When will that bad boy be in town?

The reason for the new engine was we blew the chiller on the original engine and Mercury thought it was better to build us a new engine than to take a chance on a rebuild since we race the boat.

As far as the HP1050's they changed the delivery date on those engines from spring to fall, so that changed our plans for a new boat to 2003.

I have a pair of Merc 900sc in my Cigarette Tiger.

They run great - but do require some maintenance.

Oil chnages, plugs, etc... just like any HP motor.

They use a solid lifter/cam in the 900sc which requires that you check the valve lash every 40 hours. (Takes about 45minutes per motor) (Some have said every 30, some say 60hrs). As Tank mentioned, I have a cracked valve spring which I found while checking the lash. I have 90 hours on the motors. I am having all of the springs replaced for $600 per motor parts / labor. The maintenance intervals and rebuilds is also dependant on how hard you run the boat. I cruise at 4200rpm most of the time. I plan on puting another 50 hours on this fall, then having the top end rebuilt this winter. Next winter should have 250 hours + on the motors and will have them rebuilt.

The other concern is that the stock 900SC develops 10lbs of boost under full load. A little high for less than 92 octane, or a potential problem if you get bad fuel.

The 900sc usually comes with CMI big tubes, or Stellings. My Stellings have been fine, others have had cracking problems. I have heard that the CMI's are better (and more $$$).

Other than that I love the motors so far. They idle nice and run strong.

Wow KWB, 600 per side ? Granted it's some money but A friend of mine just had his fountains 500efi springs changed at a local high performance boat shop here in Jersey and I think he had around a $4,000 bill !!

It's just the springs - I was quoted $300 per motor for the springs and about three hours per motor for labor.
