Fuel system upgrage size, hose type, easier to assemble
#1
I am now realizing that the fuel system on my boat is very inadequate for the power levels I can be making. My Scarab originally came with -6 braided SS lines. For the original 475 HP engines that may have been alright but everything I am reading is saying I should have at least -8. I am running a Holley 110 gph mechanical pump. My inventory list consists of 16 -8 straight hose ends, 20 90 degree hose ends and 24 -8 to 3/8 adapters, and about 60 feet of hose. I have thought about using the braided SS hose but wondering if there is a better solution. Is there something that is less expensive, easier to assemble. The braided stuff looks pretty but these days there are better alternatives.

I'm thinking I'm going to use Parker push lock fittings and hose. The fittings are 1/2 the cost of AN fittings, are easier to assemble and from what I read it is just as good as the AN stuff. Working with the -6 AN fittings just sucks. -8 is easier. From what I have seen the -6 is so small and it doesn't expand very well. Every -6 hose I assemble and then took apart, the inner tube barb was cutting the inner liner of the hose. Has anyone else had this problem. I remember when I worked at Bosch we were assembling -16 coolant hoses and every time we assembled that stuff the same thing happened. We had the right fittings for the right hose and used the lubricant in the hose and fittings but it would always cut the inner portion of the hose and leak. We eventually went with a fabric braided hose that was easier to assemble.

There are two types of AN hose end fittings. One slides into the hose like a barb fitting and is re-useable. The other is called a cutter type. Those fittings do cut into the hose and are not normally re-used.
I do not like using the cutter type. A big PITA to assemble.
