Default sea pump/fuel pump maintenance - how to?

2007 525EFI. Owners manual says to "check the oil level in the sea pump/fuel pump and inspect for fuel contamination".

Quick question, how do you do this??????

Thanks all.

There is a plug in the side of the fuel pump housing, flat head screwdriver will remove - chances are fuel and oil will come out when you remove this plug. Some of the guys have drilled a hole in the bottom of the housing to drain the chamber. I change mine with a 1/8 plastic hose carefully fished into the housing. I change mine every 20 - 25 hours and find a small amount of fuel - common on this setup. Fill until oil starts to run out.

I fill mine with Klotz castor bean oil. Castor has unsurpassed film strength and is made for mixing with gas.

The good thing is you can buy all the parts and rebuild it for about $60. Need a pulley puller, press and bearing separator/splitter, pretty easy

Oh and I use Merc gear lube in it

I take the entire unit out, change the impeller/housing/ and re-fill fluid minimum once a year. This keeps up with 2 issues. 1) The oil thinning from the fuel and destroying the fuel pump armature and fuel pump cam 2) 525 factory headers need to run as cool as possible, with up to par impeller and housing the max water flow is maintained. I use Merc Race Gear Lube.

07 525 Is a cool fuel and should not have a mechanical pump mounted on the sea pump like the early VST systems

couple things here for correct info.

the HP 525 always used a Gen II cool fuel system and never had a VST fuel set up. The VST system went away in 1996 for Mercruiser and the hp 525 was not even close being around in 1996.

Also the hp 525 from the start if I recall correctly came into the market in 2004 year model - it always had the mechanical fuel pump / sea water impeller pump assembly combo and again used cool fuel gen II.

The GEN II cool fuel system has the high pressure electrical fuel pump in the assembly and the hp 525 used the mechanical fuel pump attached to sea water impeller pump as a low pressure / boost fuel pump to feed the high pressure fuel pump in the cool fuel (gen II) .. this set up was the same thru out for the hp 525 OEM stock apps

Next info is the assembly without mechanical fuel pump has come down in price - retail is 419 dollars. just saying.
