Default advice on wood

Replacing the wood in the outer frame of my engine cover. It is approximately 1"x.5" ....any suggestions on species of wood to use? It will be glassed in place and covered. The hinge for the hatch screws into this wood.

marine grade douglas fir at the least. Stay away from hardwoods and pine. if it is possible to through bolt then do so.

Thanks Dave, was hoping you would have some wisdom to share....I was thinking fir but wasn't sure. There is a specialty lumber outlet local. I will see what they have Monday. I'm not sure I'll be able to through bolt it as it is designed because there is a hinge for the pad on top and the cover hinge on the bottom.

Must be S4S ( 4 square sides)? A standard Doug Fir KD stud should be about $3.50?

Why not use Star Board? My boat is currently at an upholstery shop adn in speaking with them regarding rotted wood in the cockpit he replied, "I only replace exterior structures with Star Board now."

I just got the best grade they had...was more concerned about it being clear of knots.

It's not really exterior wood...it's going to be wrapped in fiberglass. It is where the hinge for the engine cover mounts too. It looks like the screws were not sealed when put in so the water got in and rotted out the wood.
