When Joel Ramer and his girlfriend went off-roading in Walpole, he had no idea the joy ride would cost nearly $50,000.

But that’s what happened when his Jeep got stuck in the mud and he had to have it towed, according to a Fox25 News report.

After the car was towed by Assured Collision, Fox25 reported that Ramer’s itemized bill included $16,000 for an on-scene supervisor (which cost $1,250 an hour), more than $10,000 for an off-road recovery incident reponse unit and a $5,000 fee for dangerous condition liability insurance. After the 12-hour job, the manpower and equipment needed for the job totaled $48,835.

“I thought they made a mistake,” Ramer told Fox25.

The owner of Assured Collision told Fox25 that his team was working in dangerous conditions and the fees reflect the industry standard.

Future Sea-tow franchisee no doubt. that tow would cost 250 max at our local off-road area, more often than not they will settle for beer

The kid could have rented a track hoe for $500 a day max. I had to use a tracked bobcat 5 miles in the woods once, but it was free.

Kid was wheeling illegally, cops called tow company, he had no say in it. I'd tell them to keep it.

Yes you could surrender the vehicle. But rest assured, that tow company will take that person to court for the remainder of the money. That tow company is a crook, period.

just saw this

UPDATE: MA tow association says $48,000 tow bill in excess, hopefully the bad press will see the tow company do the right thing

Kid says frame is broken, cherokee's don't have a frame, never actually saw a way to kill a Cherokee apart from fire. They are awesome offroad vehicles, light and easy to fix.

Tow company does not want him to pay, they keep the jeep and then claim the loss on taxes. Old game. The tow company knows he can't pay.

Had that XJ been (ahem) "previously owned by me", I'd have suggested the tow company check the driver side visor and attempt to establish the location of the "new owner"(Joe Smith/Donald Duck/Dick Gozinya) for billing purposes.
