Three suspects are in custody after a high-speed boat chase ended less than 70 miles from northwest Cuba.
The pursuit had lasted nearly 24 hours before the suspects were apprehended around 8:30 Thursday night.

"That's a long ways away to chase them down," said Christie Cook, a Fort Myers Beach resident.
The purloined 33-foot boat, equipped with three 300-horsepower engines, was snatched from Fort Myers Beach and the thieves damaged navigational markers near Matanzas Pass before heading south.
Thanks to the large engines, the suspects were able to reach speeds approaching 70 mph. Plus, the fuel capacity of 800 to 1,000 gallons allowed for a prolonged ride.
The U.S. Coast Guard was called in by the Lee County Sheriff's Office around 1:30 a.m. Thursday to help with the chase.
"Of all the places to go, I would think Cuba would be the last place," said Walter Lane, who was visiting Fort Myers Beach as the incident unfolded.
LCSO said the investigation is active.

Its only 230 miles to Cuba from Ft Meyers and they were 65 short. 170 miles in almost 24 hours is not a very impressive speed.
Boat must have been a big old heavy straight bottom Apache that was so overbuilt that 4000 rounds from the 50mm didn't even scratch it.

Maybe the 1000 gallons of fuel--- 4 tons slowed them down. Oh no wait, we are talking in salt water, right? That must be it, after 24 hours the props corroded right away.......nothing but shafts left!

I loved the people they they got the informative sound bites from in this news report.
1000 gallons fuel capacity on a 32 foot Senator Counsel. Don't think so Jim , unless it was built for a Specific Mission.
170 frickin miles in 24 hours. I could have sailed that far in my Snailboat in that time.
Definitely was not a step bottom Fountain.
