Default Need help rigging Arneson #6 surface drive

I have a #6 Arneson on an old Donzi GT 21 I've restored and am rigging. (8 year old project) This is all being assembled for the first time, so I'm putting stuff together and figuring out what mods I'll need to make. I noticed this evening, that my stainless steel steering wing plate binds with the vertical fin on the top of the drive when it's trimmed all the way up. In most pics I see of this set-up, the vertical fin is milled off to provide clearance for the wing plate. If I notch the underside of the SS plate, I can make enough room for clearance. I don't think taking off a "notch" will compromise the wing plate's structural integrity? Any thoughts?

I hesitate to mill off the vertical fin on the drive, since I just had it shot in gloss black Imron.

How often are you going to need to trim it all the way up? If ever
