they have been testing the yanmar drives for a while now at mastry engine center. It should be interesting to see where this heads in the long term

That is correct about a Yanmar twin prop outdrive and ILmor has been testing it for over a year now matched with their engines.

If I recall correctly that Yanmar outdrive used some of the same tech as the older Yamaha Hydra drive back from the early 1990's.

From the story:

The Ilmor One Drive utilizes stern-drive components provided by engineering partner Yanmar Marine, already in operation with its diesel. The One Drive system is Environmental Protection Agency- and California Air Resources Board-certified in the United States, as well European Union RCD emissions and sound compliant."

I took out the boat with Ilmor's Paul Ray and Bob Teague and am in the process of doing a short write-up. Paul said they did more than 300 hours of durability testing on the first unit, and that Adib Mastry was incredibly helpful. He described the One Drive as "a collaboration" between Ilmor and Yanmar.

Hey Pat!

None of that information has been released by Ilmor so far. They updated their site this morning with some basic information on the One Drive (there's actually more in the story we published) but that's it for now.

I'll will stay on it.

The drive is yanmars zt370 which was developed for the Yanmar 8lv 370 hp engine. However a few years ago Adib wanted to test the drive with a gas engine. I installed the zt370 with a merc 500 efi into a restored 29 magnum that Adib had acquired. The idea was to test the out drive at higher rpm than we would see with the diesel packages

This great, any amount of competition to Mercury can only improve both products

How did it work? The drive actually looks the SX Volvo a bit, good drive just wondered if this drive had lineage anywhere. Nice to see Ilmor methodically and systematically developing better products. The 570's Chris put in the Batboats are screamers, just wonder if this could be an option since the DPX has been gone for a while now
