Hello all.

Finishing the rigging for my restoration project and I have a remote power steering reservoir for a full hydraulic Hardin/Mayfair system I need to mount in the bilge.

Question....
The instructions tell you to mount the reservoir above the power steering conversion cap that feeds the hose into the remote reservoir. My problem is that's not possible as I don't have the vertical space to get the tank above the pump.

Can I mount the remote tank a little below the power steering cap?

Just like any fluids - think radiator, brake master cylinder, etc - it's always best to mount reservoir higher as air travels up.

Anyway, it's more about fluid level. Can you have the reservoir mounted so that part of it's fluid level will be higher than the cap ?

If not, can the pump be lowered some ?

I can mount it so that 2/3 of the remote tank are above the conversion cap.

Then you should be good for 2/3s of the tank capacity. with no pump you rely on gravity. You should be good to go as the system doesnt really need an extra tank to function correctly..

You don't need the remote tank.

Ok, what purpose does it serve? I have a lathem setup and the cap is welded with a line to the remote reservoir. This just buy you time if you develop a leak?

If you have a single Cylinder setup,then you need a reservoir.
With dual cylinders the fluid flows from rod end to cap end of opposite cylinder.

No you don't.

It serves as one more thing to leak and or spend money on.

there are a lot of mercury marine power steering pumps that hold a small amount of ps fluid it the small built in reservoir,the remote reservoir is nice for seeing the level but not a necessity.
