boating in SoCal
#3

There used to be a hotbed of performance boating activity and many, many users on OSO from the greater LA area (since the founder of OSO lives in Newport Beach and drug all his boating friends from So. Cal onto here). But now the scene has mellowed out a bit around here. But I can try and guide you in the right direction.
What are you boating on? Where are you boating from? "Los Angeles" is kinda vague. Multiple ports. But, the must do's? Catalina run! Out of Long Beach or Huntington. Explore Newport Harbor and/or do a day at the 3 harbors (Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport) it's a good run between with great scenery in each. You could also run up to Marina Del Rey (or down if you launch at MDR). Good waterfront spots we always hit are the Yardhouse in Long Beach, Cheesecake factory in Redondo Harbor and/or Marina Del Rey, Woodys in Newport was always a fun bar (across from the Lido Dry stacks).
If you do make a run over to Catalina and plan on coming back the same day, run over in the morning and get out of there before 12:30 or so. The wind picks up and the swell routinely gets nasty. It's a great town and I recommend staying the weekend.
If you want to venture out a bit you can head up our way (about 30 minutes north of Malibu) to the Channel Islands Harbor. Run the 14 miles out to Anacapa Isl, Santa Cruz (another 14 miles), Santa Rosa (20 more miles). It's like a different world out there. Or run from CI harbor up to Santa Barbara for lunch at Brophie Bros. Great run up the coast with cool scenery. We'd always run close to shore at Rincon and race the cars on the freeway. Good times.
A visit to Havasu should be in store 6-7 hour drive from L.A. and a VERY good time. Or Lake Nacimiento is also a bit closer, 3.5 hour drive up the 101, very nice scenery, smaller lake. Let me know if you need anything. Welcome to So. Cal. The weather is great, it's beautiful...You just have to put up with the politics!
