JL Audio 8.8's
#1
Purchase 4 JL 8.80's. They call for an amp that will supply them with 50 - 250 watts/speaker. RMS of 125 watts/speaker. What are others running for amps to supply these and the best way to connect. I have Alpine PDX 4,150s laying around that I had used from my 7.70s. I thinking these would be enough, but I am wanting to provide the most/best power to them. I am planning going to be ordering 4 more. For connecting them would you suggest I connect 1 speaker/ch at 4ohm. or connect 2 in series/channel. I have 4 of these amps but not sure connecting in series will then reduce the watts going to each speaker enough that I won't get the most out them. What have others done here. Powering up the amps is no problem. I aready have huge power supply, and genny.

Using 4 PDX 4.150's will be more than enough power for (8) 8.8's. I use just one 4.150 to power 8 DCGold 7's.
Bridge each amp so they are 2 x 300 watts. They are under rated as well and will be closer 340 watts x 2 RMS.

So Griff,
You ran series to ea. pair of DC Golds on the amp. I did this with one of my amps for the 7.70s, but did no if that would over load the amp or have the possibility of running to hot for the 8,80. I was thinking of using 2 of the amps for the 8.8, one speaker/channel and I have more 7.70 to place so I would us the other 2 amps for these.

Yes, 2 speakers wired in a series for each channel. The amp is 2 ohm stable and gets only slightly warmer than running it at 4 ohms.
Using 2 of the 4.150's to power the eight 8.8's should be plenty.

I have 4 M650's and 2 M880's. Initially all 6 speakers were on a JL M600/6 amp. I have since ditched the 600/6 and gotten a 800/8. The M880's are getting 2 channels each (bridged) and sound MUCH better. There is a huge different in how they are playing with the added clean power.

What ever you do , try to make sure they are sealed up tight , and a smaller enclosure for those may require some extra wattage. Resist the tempation to wire up two sets of those for a 2 ohm load per side.
If you have a powerful class a/b amp kicking around , test it out on a bank of those 8.8s and see what you think. Those big jl's seem to come alive with a good punchy amp like the old power hungry ppi and fosgate series. Will still sound nice with a xd or pdx series though , esp bridged at a 4 ohm load.
