I've helped Jim in years past with promoting the event and anywhere else I can to help grow and better DS over the years. I've known Jim for a long time and the thing I think kinda sucks is that people really don't understand how much time, effort, blood, sweat, tears Jim has put into these two events over the years. Not to mention the enormous obstacles he seemingly always overcomes . It was always his baby and he is responsible for the vast majority of direction it has taken. He's always trying new ideas and attempts to better the event each year. Some times the ideas are a hit, sometimes they aren't. You have to remember, this was arguably the largest event of it's kind in the Nation for several years, even larger than the grand-daddy Key West Poker Run when considering spectators, participants and mostly organized events.
The one thing people might not realize is that Jim has a full time career that is pretty demanding and it sounds as if he's just been promoted. Even with his full time job, DS and MB demand year-round planning and work. His position is absolutely a thankless job and contrary to peoples belief, unlike some poker run organizers, he makes little to no money off the events; money is rolled over to pay for the next years event and/or goes to charity.
It bums me out that people were angered at the changes and cancelations he was required to make for safety reasons this year. I understand the disappointment but a little more understanding from some would be nice. Jim has always been open to fresh ideas and constructive criticism. He has always been open to change and trying new things. I think this new set up is a great transition to a new generation, while keeping him in the loop in a manner that allows for his wealth of knowledge, contacts and experience to be tapped when needed.
Looking forward to the changes and glad to see Jim is going to get the much deserved break he's been seeking for a few years now.
