No the boat was dead when I went to start it had to use a jump box. And it's not the first time. I found that I have a bad alternator on my starboard motor so fixing that now. Checked and load tested batteries there good. When I checked the built on trickle charge I could here it buzzing but when we checked batteries there was no charge coming from the charger

Your charger is probably FUBR. Anyway how often do you use your boat? Is it in the water or on a trailer?

you said the boat is an 87, is this the original charger? if so do you really want to waste time and money on a 30 year old electrical component? you would be money ahead to buy a new one with better electronics.

I agree with the suggestion of a new charger but thought I'd just add something that I mentioned somewhere else on a related electrical thread.
On mine the MerCathode is wired directly to the battery so that even if the battery switch is off and the boat is in the water the cathode is still working . As soon as the boat comes out of the water I pull the fuse holder to the hot feed on the battery , killing the cathode .
If you don't do this your battery is constantly discharging all the time , in the water or out .
