I have somewhat of a disagreement with my son - I believe that the best way to check the "crankcase" oil is when the boat is floating on the water -- He on the other hand says that on our lift should be just fine. We haven't had an issue but I thought I would ask for the "masters" opinion.

Mine reads the same either way...

It needs to be checked at wot, of course.


I check mine at rest in the water for a consistent and repeatable reading.

The right answer is when the boat is in the water. That's when the oil level really counts, not when it's at the pitch that the lift puts it at.

Now, IF you have a lift that you can adjust height separate front and rear, you could buy one of those little stick on levels used for RVs...
...and place in in the boat somewhere hidden; so you can place it so it reads level when the boat is sitting in the water.

Then you can either leave that level in place, and pitch your lift nose high a little bit to match level; or take a second level and put it on the bunk support so you can see it from your lift switches and you can match the angle easily.

At rest in the water is the most accurate.
