Default Dummy Power Steering Pump Seizes???? Bypass for future?

Out running all day yesterday just fine. Coming into dock, loud shriek and seconds later, temp alarm goes off. Upon exam, port s-belt is cut...... Tried placing starboard belt on starboard and it starting shrieking immediately. Shut down and got tow back to marina. Buddy was at marina having mobile mechanic working on his Scarab and he sent the guy over to take a look. I had figured it was worse but just the power steering pump (not connected to hydraulics) was stuck/seized.

His suggestion was to get shortened s-belt and just bypass the dummy pump.

Does this seem like a reasonable suggestion?

1999 Scarab 33 AVS with twin 502 MPI's 500+hrs Latham external hydraulic steering.

sounds like a great idea to me. No reason to have another component to fail if you don't have too

Yes, that makes sense as long as you know/carry both belt sizes
