Any value in boring??
#1
So I haven't pulled my apart yet however I'm just trying to pre plan...motor is a stock 525 sc and I'm building it with new rods pistons bearings dart heads etc....my question is if I find the cylinder walls to be in fine shape is there any added value to boring it out anyway to say a 468 or is not going to gain me anything?? Don't want to waste the money for little gain if I don't need to
Thanks

is it going to gain you in power? not that you will notice, is it going to gain you in engine efficiency? most likely yes. unless the engine has only a few hours on it the bores will not be perfect. you will gain by boring and truing the cylinder walls for a good ring seal, etc.

It’s also a great time to deck the block for a better seal and then you have a fresh surface to use the MLS gaskets. It’s not just the boring that happens but a good cleaning and prepping of the block will give you a longer living engine.

I'd just bore the minimum to get a round cylinder. .030 over is the norm. You could even go .010 or .020 over, and custom pistons. I wouldnt go .060 unless mandatory. Those blocks arent like a dart block, and once you start boring them, the walls get thin. Then you're back to bore distortion, ring seal, etc. If it was a max effort N/A race engine, then bore away. Marine pleasure engine with forced induction, nah. Just my opinion
