I looked at a 1999 35 Lightening recently and the seller (who I will keep confidential at this time) states that the engines and drives are all original (502 EFI Mags with Bravo 1 drives). If I have the engines scanned I know I can get hours and RPM data, but will it also provide the engine serial numbers? The ID decal on top of the electrical box which normally has the serial number info was missing and I could not locate the secondary ID pate that is normally on the block.

There was several of those and I would imagine the individual is being honest. I'd be more concerned everything looks original and sanitary along with service records which would have the serial numbers etc. just a though. If you dig around upside down and bang your head here and there you should be able to make note if they look like the originals also.

Engine scan printout will show the engine numbers.
Here's the scan from my 496ho.

EDIT, Sorry, I'm trying to attach an image but I'm told the jpeg has the incorrect file extension or something......?
The printout does show the engine number up the top.

The Mercruiser engine serial number will not automatically show up within a scan of an ECM/PCM especially the older MEFI ECM's....If you happen to have a print-out of a scanned engine with the serial number on it then the number would have been inputted into the scanned data engine profile by the service technician at the time of using the computer software to scan the engine ECM.
If the serial number tag happens to still be there in place then you should be able to find the number just above the engine starter on the rear starboard side of the engine block as seen below for examples, https://www.perfprotech.com/blog/art...serial-numbers

- Mercruiser Engines: The serial number tag is located near the STARTER, by the flywheel housing; or, on the ROCKER ARM or FLAME ARRESTOR COVER. View Location
- Transom plates: The serial number tag is located on the INNER TRANSOM PLATE inside the boat; or, on the UPPER SWIVEL PIN. Older Models...Read More or for Newer Models...Read More
- Mercruiser Sterndrives: The serial number tag is located on the UPPER DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING (starboard side or on the back of the housing). Older Models...Read More or for Newer Models...Read More

starter area dog tag riveted to block for that app listed
If claimed OEM stocked, all is needed ---- any of the serial numbers ie: engine(s) or drive or transom assembly.
That is all recorded thru Mercruiser. This in return will tell alot info about the stock app and what dealer sold it from the start including the first original buyer from the get go. It will tell any warranty claims (if the dealer recorded and claimed back to Merc ) also will tell all service bulletins per that app set up plus any recalls including federal recalls just for a jist. .
