Just registered my 2001 Ram diesel 3500 and was surprised to find as of 5/1/16 it no longer requires any NJMV inspections.
Apparently, vehicles exempt (in my case diesels with GVWR 8,501 to 17,999) are no longer required by State (NJ) Inspection
stations..........................must keep a safety log on vehicle in periods of 3 month time frames....???

You can buy a inspection book at most truck stops. Fill out a page and toss it in the glove box. Or register it passenger plate commercial rate all inspection is required except emissions
atleast you'll have a sticker. A lot of cops still don't understand what NJDMV is doing

Gotta love NJ. Government at its best.
When I purchased and registered my F350 (from a Ford dealer), I was told no inspection or log book required, which I find somewhat amazing given most of these vehicles are work trucks and subject to abuse.
I've never been stopped. No issues.
