i have a 98 454 Gen 6 MPI. it all started when I had steam coming out on the starboard side exhaust (threw hull). I did a leak down test and determined the heads needed to be rebuilt. when I had the heads rebuilt I also had the injectors checked. 3 of the 8 fuel injectors tested bad. I looked up mercruiser fuel injectors and they are $250 EACH. I can get 8 aftermarket fuel injectors for about $160. dose anybody have any experience with aftermarket injectors? do they last?
thanks in advance

20 dollars per injector should be telling you alot. You get what you pay for, China knock off junk. If your original injectors flowed bad and or are in fact bad ---- wait till the 20 buck injectors are installed. Sometimes they just end up shutting off as well ( the knock off fuel injectors ).
The injectors you have can develop an issue and about 50 percent of the time can be brought back to life fully. But if it is an issue on the electrical side then they are bad and disregarded.
I am able to get OEM injectors at better pricing as well along with testing and flow testing any gas side fuel injector. My experience is many years on the marine side.

I have recondition fuel injectors in stock but will need the X amount of good ones from you to flow test making sure you will be getting all 8 or 16 balanced across the board. price range is 85 to 105 per injector shipped for the recondition ones.
Do not have a recommendation for aftermarket injectors. Many reasons. Some of the reasons to mention is dead times and flow patterns and flow volumes never match compared to the OEMs..

The aftermarket injectors that look like the stock ones are complete garbage. I bought a set to test on my injector flow bench, they literally shut down at 40 to 45 psi and were 30+% apart. I was astonished they were so bad, i expected them to be a little off, not destroy your motor "off"! I have some used gen 6 mercruiser injectors flowed/tested, new screens and orings if you need 3, i sent you a pm. Best way would be to flow yours on bench next to replacements . IF you indeed do have a mefi3 ecu and shorty injectors, i have a re-scaled tune and new, match flowed injector package with high quality injectors i can provide, smitty

A true Merc OEM built 1998 454 MPI would be MEFI 1 and not the small silver bullet injectors.
1999 Year model started MEFI 3 and the smaller injectors.
There is a common issue with the 1998 and back fuel injectors -( black side production big blocks ) - alot of times its fixable except for electrical issues of the injector(s).

525 injectors hold up but again - all injectors need to be tested at sometime - more so sooner than one would think. They become contaminated. Also any injector can have electrical issues at anytime frame..
Contamination is very common --- one example --- how many boats running around with the rubber fuel line from the gas tank to the engine first fuel inlet side - Has that fuel line been changed within the last 5 years, how about the last 10 years how about the last 20 years ? My point is they need to be changed like every 5 years currently. Internally the rubber fuel line degrades and get into the fuel injectors for a jist. There is so many ways fuel injectors get contaminated. Water / condensation is another issue. Internal fuel pump wear another issue. Aluminum oxide, paint , internal fuel rail corrosion, fuel evaporation that leaves deposits and so on.
