Default Fastech steering cables.

Hey all, hope everyone had a fun and safe weekend. I had my 292 out on lake Michigan on Sunday. The water was like glass, got her up to 68 mph via gps. Ran from Hammond to Michigan city. I plan on doing some upgrades this coming fall including full hydraulic steering, new trim tab rams and aluminum exhaust (weight reduction). But in the meantime, how do I tighten or adjust the steering cables? I have about 4-5 inches of play in the steering wheel and she becomes a real handful at higher speeds if the water isn't glass. Or would it be better just to replace the cables? Any input is appreciated, thanks!

With the engine off or with a running engine that operates the pump? To my knowledge there is no adjustment. Cable may be stretched. But I never heard of that. Usually they tighten up because of lack of lubrication and then are replaced

On my 2004 the tilt steering has a ujoint and a couple of clamp bolts that where loose in the column. This caused the exact same thing on my boat, I still ended up with hydraulic steering, you can’t beat it..

I will be installing it towards the end of the season. Getting a full kit from IMCO and a Latham helm. Just want to enjoy the boat for now. Only had it out 4 times since I bought it. But I will definitely crawl under there and check that out. Thanks!

Pull back the rubber boot around the steering column just in front of steering wheel. You will see the ujoint and the other clamp connections that might be loose. I am happy with my Imco steering and helm, nothing like hydro. When I tightened my helm up it almost eliminated any slop I had. Good luck
