Default 1998 Volvo Penta 5.7GSI

Starts after a 10-15sec cranking with throttle revved a bit. Stays running for about a minute-then sputters and dies. Replaced the Engine Coolant Sensor (there was some improvement). Replaced the Throttle Position Sensor - no change. If I remove the connector to the TPS, the engine revvs a bit higher but stays running a bit longer. If I remove the MAP sensor connector, it idles better but still dies after about 2 minutes. The temperature gauge actually starts to read this last time. 100deg F. Please help. I’m not a great mechanic but a good electrician. I do think it’s electrical but don’t know which direction to head other than keep replacing electrical parts. When running, the engine sounds great! Seems like a lot of fuel being dumped into the throttle body when I watch it with the flame arrestor off. Again, I’m not a mechanic.

you will need to post your model number and serial number of the engine.

MAP readings are from the scan ? Possible issue of that ( MAP ) and or next ---- I bet you have impeller pieces lodged into the T stat housing that the coolant temp sensor is being block form water flow so it it reads 100 degrees or less all the time - the coolant temp sensor can not read air period. . This in return makes the engine run rich plus internally very hot cause of the restriction water flow that is not getting with the blockage in the T stat housing water ports.. This most likely is your issue and MAP and possible stuck open T stat - also possiblle fuel injector(s) stuck open or flow issue --- all 4 possible being a combo issue - My money is blockage in the T stat housing water ports for being the first issue again this blocks watyer flow to the coolant temp sensor - This is common with broken impeller pieces in Volvo Penta apps ---- Then any or all of the 3 issue I mentioned on top of being possible in the mix as well. . Report back what fixes this. especially since I gave you the direction were and what to look at here.

Im in North Texas if the real help is needed. and Im sure I can fix this very easily. putting you back on the water were you need to be.

one other thing for added info - if you remove number 1 spark plug after you run the engine and it has a lot of fuel in it - then the float in the cool fuel has an issue as well. The cool fuel by pass / overfill dumps fuel into the intake then into number one cylinder. Hence why number 1 cyc can fill with fuel

The cool fuel for volvo needs to be winterized correctly - if not they will fail. Water runs thru them as well so they need to be drained 100 % for winterization. = there is a special procedure to do that alone. Also the cool fuel has paint that peels internally that messes up the fuel injectors and the float / needle & seat within the cool fuel.
