I need to make forward reverse and reverse forward. I'm not near my boat to be albe to look at it. Will it be apparent how to do it when I see it? Is there anything special I will need?

I have the Gaffrig offshore controls at the helm. its a merc 575SCi with a Bravo 1 XR.

Is it changed at the helm or on the shifter block thing on the engine?

It is changed at the shifter. if the cable comes in from the front, move it to the back and vice versa
