Looking for some drive and prop advice on my 1999 353 Fastech powered by Carb HP 500’s. Current setup is bravo 1 drives with 4 blade 30p props. Was thinking about either doing EXT boxes with Imco -2 lowers with a prop change or just going with Imco -2 lowers and prop change. Would like to go with Hydromotive P-5X prop with either setup.
So my questions are:
What pitch P-5X prop I should go with?
Do I gain anything with adding EXT boxes?
Should I just add Imco -2 lowers?

Yes I’d like more MPH. Haven’t had WOT yet due to still breaking in fresh motor. Have been up to 68 mph @ 4400 rpm’s. Would like to be an honest low 80’s in fresh water. Comes out of the hole very well with no tan use. Cruising 50mph @3200 rpm. Someday I’d like to due 540’s when motors need refresh

We had an 05 353 with 525s, XRs standard length lowers, ITS extension boxes running labbed 28 5 blade Maximus with no diffuser rings (pic shows with but best speed and handling was without). It ran a real 82-83 consistently with an 84 thrown in there for bench racing. In our offshore club there was the same exact boat and power without ITS boxes and it ran 4-5 mph less very consistently. Ran side by side many times during the runs and it was the same outcome. Seems the 353 needs boxes to get its top speed. You should talk to Lake Effect on here, Scott has a 100mph 353 big power running on boxes, I believe he is running shorty lowers but not 100% sure.

Sharp looking boat! I’ve been getting mixed info on putting boxes on. Sonecare satung not to add boxes and others are saying they react very well to them. Also getting told not to install lowers and to keep the 4 blades as the 5 will be too much. I had Imco boxes, -2 lowers with 5 blades on my 33 Outlaw with same power and it ran 83 anyday regarless of weight and threw a nice tail.

Seems as though I’ve answered this question a million times.
With stock power, you will see little or no gains with boxes and shorties. With boxes the boat will come on plane better and ride a little better, but at WOT, you won’t notice much. Get your 4 blade props labbed and the boat should be consistent at 80.
Bump the power and add boxes, the lowers won’t do anything until you are over 80mph. Use SportMaster -2 and IMCO boxes. Search axapowell, you can read all day on the subject.
