I just bought some Bel Ray marine gear oil, the product data sheet shows its a 75W-90. It was 6.50 a quart for a GL5 full synthetic, I couldn't resist,so has anyone here used the stuff on their bravo 1? From what I've read only, its been mentioned, its what Mercury uses in their bottles?

Thats not the tier of Bel ray gear oil in the Merc bottles. Bel Ray has 3 tiers of Marine gear oil and Merc uses Bel Ray lowest tier. Its NOT a SYN gear oil and is a 80 w 90 gear oil in the Merc bottles label High Performance. .

So just to clarify, going directly with Bel Ray Marine Synthetic gear oil(PN 99741), was indeed a better choice?

For testing purposes I do not know nor I doubt anyone else has data about it for real world testing in Bravos. . But on paper from Bel Ray then Yes - its their higher choice.. Bel Ray is going thru huge changes. Maybe marine gear oils from them is a question mark. I do know some of the story but its not 100 percent clear. This same company is under with Royal Purple and some other companies

As I requested the the oil weight from their tech advisor, I was referred to Cody at royal purple, for automotive oils. Very interesting, I'd like to see who response from the marine dept to provide the marine info.

Keep in mind there are some gear lubes that people have had issues with in Bravo's.
I think it was Amsoil that caused delays in shifting because it was simply too slick and the cone clutch would not engage.

That would have been with Severe Gear which, BTW, George at AADS no longer recommends using as he has seen smoked cone clutches since a formulation change at some point. George does still recommend Amsoil Marine Gear Lube. I've been using it along with many of my dock mates for years with no cone clutch issues.

This is exactly why I was hoping, someone had already tried it. I didn't want to run into any issues. Aside from being a GL5 full synthetic and half the price of merc gear oil, I cant figure out why this stuff is not flying off the shelf at $5.60 a quart, and the semi synthetic is $2 a quart.
