Default Magnum 27 Sedan

A friend bought a Magnum 27 sedan , lost interest in it, I have been wanting one for ever( never ridden on one though). I am primarily a fishermen, who had many top tier offshore fishing boats. I have an opportunity to purchase this boat if I like. My question is would this hull be a good fit for a dedicated fishing boat? It is presently in its original state with twin I/Os , was thinking of a conversion to a twin outboard, this would open up the cockpit for some additional space. Any present sedan owners, would love to here feedback negative or positive. If not a good fit boat will be listed for $4k

I have two Magnums one sport & one sedan that I plan to use as my fishing boat. What the sport lacks in room the sedan more than makes it up. But you can fish out of a sport , just a little tight. Here is a pic of my sport with it's past owner out fishing on it.

Default Magnums available

Gerry, I buy in a heartbeat if everything checks out. Use what comes with the Sedan I/O's and then decide if you want to switch to Outboards.

Magnum 27 opinions needed ? Still thinking about it by the looks of it.

I would never consider using a Mag 27 of any model for fishing and I've been around and on a good few boats designed from the outset for fishing. With the exception of the rare Canadian made 27 CC's I wouldn't think of anything in the Mag line suitable for fishing unless you're looking at a much older 35 open.
When you get offshore and you're trolling or a few people run to one side to gaff something nice you need ample freeboard. and the 27 doesn't have it IMO and that's not even considering where you stash your catch or rods , bait , ice etc .
I told you a long time ago , go find a nice condition old Bertram 25 and you'll be happy. You might even thank me .

Great hull but really designed to run, not anchor. You can answer half of your question without any help...... Is there enough cockpit space for fishing? Take a look and think about what you need then decide.
The second half, Sea keeping ability is great but it's a narrow beam, steep deadrise boat so it will cut through the chop very nicely. The trade off is stability at rest. If you fish on the anchor or drifting it will rock around a bit in the slop and as said above, not a lot of freeboard. Pros and cons.

Classic old boat, bit of a collectors piece now, most people would prefer to see it restored to original with teak decking or marine carpet in the cockpit and no blood! That doesn't mean you shouldn't proceed. I'd say it's not an ideal fishing boat but could do the job if you really want one.

RR

EDIT: As mentioned above, a 25 Bertram is a real battleship. Huge cockpit, wide beam, stable at rest and also a bit of a classic too.

It really is a real classic AND it also has something that proper fishing boats need. A self bailing cockpit !
