Default Scarab 1 transom help

Hey all I’m new to the site as a member but have been searching it for years. I am reaching out for some help. I have a 1985 scarab 1 that needs a new transom. I’ve searched and searched but can’t seem to find the answers I’m looking for. I’ve seen some guys just cutting out the inner liner, doing the replacement, and glassing everything back in. I was going to go the other route and remove the top cap but have a question I can’t seem to find the answer for. That is once I remove the top cap will the engine compartment inner liner, and floor come out so I can get to the stringers and transom. Any info would be great and thanks in advance

I've owned this and had this same issue with mine. I removed the liner and went with a conventional stringer set up. The problem I ran into with this boat that many others have around this year is shotty craftsmanship like the boat was rushed through production, exposed wood, unsealed drain holes, etc. What started out as a transom replacement turned into a full gut and rebuild and by the end of it the total cost way outweighed the worth of the boat for what it is. I would suggest you strip everything that's usable and try to find a hull to build and cut your losses, unless its the boat you truly want to build. If this boat is really what you want remove the tank and all the foam and drill into all the stringers and bulkheads inside the boat to see the extent of the rot. On my 85 when i removed the liner the 4x4 blocks of wood that my motor bolted to were just pressure treated posts sitting inside uncovered and they were rotten. Id also suggest separating the top from the bottom at the bond line because of being a small boat its hard to get to everything if you need to replace it all.

I have checked the stringers in the tank well and they appear to be solid. I don’t have much money in the boat and the 383 stroker in the boat is worth much more than I paid for it. I was going to dig into it by removing the top cap and liner then survey the rot from there to decide. If it’s too much work I’ll scrap it. I just wanted to make sure that liner would come out after removing the cap. A lot less time than cutting everything out and patching it in.

Yeah its attacked to the upper part of the boat separate it and go from there you should get a really good indication of what condition its in form there.

I am early in the process of my 84 scarab 1 stringer/ transom repair. I do plan on separating the boat into 3 pieces. I'm in a garage with low ceilings but the boat is sitting 6" off the ground. Drilled into stringers under dash and the bit sank as soon as I got through the fiberglass. Boat has been in family for 25 years, planning on keeping it another 25 years. Will probably start a new thread for this build, but you can't buy another boat like it new for the cost of rebuilding it yourself.
