Default Temp gauge question

looking to setup a temporary oil temp gauge just to make sure things are happy.... can I use a water temp gauge? they are both thermometers basically and in the same range.... and I have a spare water temp gauge and sender sitting on the shelf.

Sure. The sender doesn't know if it's water or oil.
