454 rear main leak

Default 454 rear main leak

Hello so I have a 454 in a 98 commander. Just got the boat and apparently the motor was redone 10 hours ago. It is very clean however I cant find the serial number to the engine so I'm not sure which 454 was put in it. Pretty sure it's a gen VI block because it has the mech fuel pump boss that's blocked off by teague with electric fuel pump. I have a leak at the rear and after filming a video its dripping off the oil pan flange at the rear main seal.

Gonna have a shop on monday pull the motor but is there anything else I should have them check while the motor is out? Also, why would the rear main go if the engine truly only had 10 hours on it? Is it the oil pan leaking at the seal?

it probably leaked from first start. it may be an older 2 piece seal block which are harder to get installed than the one piece. ten hours isnt that long of a time.

okay makes sense yeah I do believe it's a 6th gen block which should be one peice?

Any items they should absolutely check while the engine is out?

Don’t rule out the oil pan gasket. I had a very expensive gasket completely disintegrate after about 15 hours. Leaked right at the back at wot.

Check you valve covers they can leak down the back of the block and look like a rear seal leak.

Its definitely dripping off the oil pan right at the rear main

There are 3 oil passages with pipe plugs around the rear cam journal area and also one in the rear of the block below the distributor, something to check.

could one of those make it drip from the flange where the oil pan meets the rear main cap?
