Default Machine bell housing for rear mount

This is a KE housing, Mercury rear mount , Mercury starter .

I have a 1 1/2” from the starter teeth to the mount plate.

This black starter pad trim ring adds another 1/8".

Do I need to have the starter pad machined down 3/8" ?

I assume that when KE had these made that he "incorporated" the starter pad to accoodate for a rear engine mount ?

I could be wrong , but I think those bell housings were designed for the old Delco Remy Starters ?
Sometimes you gotta do what it takes to make it work , If you have to machine it then do.

Don't see a difference in a Delco starter other than the snout.

Trying to understand if I need to have the housing machined down to accommodate the rear engine mount install. Have to have the gear ring flipped and install the mount. Don't want to bolt all together and find out the starter won't engage the flywheel.

The ring gear needs to be moved to the rear of the flywheel, been through this before

Yes, ring has to be flipped. Need longer dowel pins as well.

I guess I need to measure the width of starter gear tonight.. Ring gear is 1/2" so , gear needs to extend 1/4" before engaging ring gear. total 3/4" travel for total ring engage.

. That sound right?

I went from a block mount starter ( bravo application ) to a tranny drive and the only thing I needed to do was move the ring gear and put on the correct starter and it worked fine, no machining

Just talked with Keith . Said housing was manufactured for a rear mount . question answered by the man himself. That's class.
