Assuming your talking about the "check valve" screwed to back of pump (that the ps hose attaches to)...it is a one-way valve that (in twin eng applications) prevents overflowing non-running eng's reservior...primarily when, only, one eng is running.

Is that valve able to be screwed out?
If it’s not there can it affect the operation of the pump?
I fitted 525’s into a older boat and have no power assist.
I believe everything is connected right.Still have cable from helm and it is fine.
Seems like the pump is not pumping??

If there is any foaming in the fluid it still has air in the system, I remove the serpentine belt and spin the pump with a drill while turning the wheel lock to lock.......you sure the lines arent switched

If you have one or more external add-on cylinders, you may want to disconnect hoses and make sure seals are not holding the rams tight from freely moving.
Since your setup is cable with power assist...I would disconnect cable from drive, and remove from the actuator. Make sure tube (that cable slides thru) is cleaned, greased, and cable slides thru freely. While cable is out make sure at helm wheel turns with ease.
If cable moves free, the actuator tube is internally clean-greased, and the pressure is good from pump...then issue is the actuator itself.

There seems to be no turbulence in the pump reservoir.
i have checked the cable and it is free.
Need to check output pressure next.
Saginaw rack,high pressure line is on left looking at transom?

Pulled the pump from one of the race motors and straight away power steering.
It is very jerky and ratchety.How long should it take to get all the air out of the system.
Ran it at idle turning wheel back and forth for 3 minutes.
